Types of Acne-treating ingredients
If you have acne-prone skin, you will be familiar with the different types of acne-treating ingredients used in Acne treatment. The most common ingredients off the shelves would be: Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, Sulphur and even your AHAs/BHAs.
Today we will go through some of these ingredients and see how these ingredients aid in Acne treatment.
1. Benzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl Peroxide is present in numerous acne products whether its OTC or prescribed. How does Benzoyl Peroxide aid in reducing Acne?
Benzoyl Peroxide contains anti-bacterial properties, which helps to reduce the acne-causing bacteria aka Propionibacterium Acnes (P.Acnes). Depending on the concentration used, it may take a few weeks before improvement is seen. Besides, high concentrations of Benzoyl Peroxide can result in dryness and irritation. Therefore, it should be used in lower concentrations for a start.
2. Salicylic Acid
The next most common ingredient would probably be Salicylic Acid. Did you know that Salicylic Acid does not reduce acne-causing bacteria? Which means that you probably won't see any reasonable improvement in reduction of swelling with Salicylic Acid.
The main function of Salicylic Acid is to exfoliate the skin in order to remove impurities and clogged sebum from the pores. Therefore, you may see your skin peeling after using Salicylic Acid. Also, there could be increased redness and irritation.
Sulphur has similar properties as Salicylic Acid. It contains exfoliative properties as well as mild anti-bacterial properties, which can help to treat mild Acne. Do note that there are some side effects associated such as dryness and irritation.
It is important to note how these ingredients work and choose your acne products wisely! Do take note of the possible side effects as well, especially if you have sensitive skin.
